Hair Loss: Causes, Treatments

Hair Loss

Hair thinning and hair loss is one of the most common conditions and concerns we see at our practice. It can affect the scalp or the entire body and may be be due to hereditary or hormone-related pattern baldness, stress, vitamin deficiency or an autoimmune disorder (alopecia areata). Hair loss impacts both sexes, though it is more common in men (50% of the US population) than women (around 25%). Regardless of the type or extent of hair loss, the condition can often be very debilitating. Proper diagnosis, care and treatment is essential.

The Causes Of Hair Loss

A full and thorough diagnostic process is required to determine the cause behind any patient’s hair loss, however the most common factors include:

  • Hereditary factors
  • Hormones and hormonal changes
  • Vitamin imbalance
  • Medical conditions or autoimmune disease
  • Stress

How We Treat Hair Loss at Kline Dermatology

We take a multi-modal approach to treating hair loss as we find that this ensures the best and most satisfactory result for our patients. For both men and women experiencing male or female-pattern baldness, this will likely include a series of platelet-rich plasma (PRP) injections spaces a month apart, combined with an advanced protocol of daily scalp homecare with prescription-strength minoxidil. Some patients may also be prescribed additional medication, including oral doses of finasteride (propecia), to boost results. This is assessed on a case-by-case basis. For patients suffering from alopecia areata, corticosteroids injections and immunosuppressants are most often recommended. In rare cases, we will refer patients out for hair transplant surgery.
